GSO Education and Community Engagement Programming serves over 28,000 children through over 150 events.
Lollipops concerts introduce children to classical music and orchestral instruments through free interactive concerts. During each concert, chamber ensembles perform while a storybook relating to the music is read aloud.
A collaboration between the South Carolina Children’s Theatre (SCCT) and the GSO, Once Upon An Orchestra programs are presented at SCCT at no cost. They feature a character performance of a children’s book while musicians accompany each story with select classical pieces.
EdReach is an in-school concert series program for Greenville County elementary school students. The String Quintet, Wind Quintet and Solo Percussion perform for all public elementary schools throughout Greenville County. EdReach concerts introduce students to the instruments and musicians of the GSO.
The Children’s Concert is an educational version of one of the GSO’s Masterworks Series concerts performed for Greenville County elementary and home-school students free of charge. Two lucky students are selected for the “Tchivzhel Challenge” and get to conduct the GSO during this concert.
These annual concerts feature young orchestra musicians performing alongside musicians from the GSO. Partnering with the advanced programs from the Greenville County Youth Orchestra and Carolina Youth Symphony respectively, both programs offer young musicians the opportunity to experience a professional orchestra environment.
Music Mentors was developed through extensive collaboration with music teachers from the Greenville County School District (GCSD). Selected GCSD Band and Orchestra programs welcome GSO musicians on campus four times during the school year to demonstrate professional approaches to tone, practicing, and career planning.
The Guest Artist Enrichment Programs offer workshops, Master Classes, and short recitals for students each year featuring visiting GSO guest artists. The GSO presents these programs at Upstate colleges, universities, the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities, the Fine Arts Center, and Greenville County schools.
For over twenty years, the GSO has partnered with area universities to offer one of the region’s leading arts administration internship programs. Interns are given the unique and invaluable opportunity to gain essential industry skills and hands-on experience. Participants take with them the necessary experience to determine the next step in their career.
